Pet food recall: Del Monte plant not affected

Lawrence facility doesn't make products on list

A nationwide pet food recall has not affected production at a pet products facility in Lawrence.

Del Monte Pet Products, 727 N. Iowa, mostly makes Kibbles ‘n Bits food, which is not on any recall list.

“We are not supplied by Menu Foods,” said Mary Sestric, a Del Monte Foods spokeswoman in Pittsburgh.

As a precaution, Topeka-based Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc. has voluntarily recalled five types of Science Diet gravy and sauce cat foods.

Hill’s operates its headquarters and a production facility in Topeka, and the company announced this week that Menu Foods Inc. manufactures those five types of Science Diet food, which is less than one-half of 1 percent of its total production line.

The recalled Science Diet products include ocean fish dinner cans for kittens and adult cats, an adult cat beef dinner, and a chicken dinner for adult cats and mature adult cats.

In total, the Menu Foods recall includes 42 brands of wet-style or “cuts and gravy” cat food and 53 brands of the same type of dog food. The recall was based on suspicion that the food was causing kidney failure in pets.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has sent inspectors to Menu Foods plants in Emporia and New Jersey.

Some of the 60 million cans and pouches recalled have been blamed for the deaths of at least 16 pets nationwide, according to The Associated Press.

An area cat who was ill after eating food that had been recalled appears to be improving, her owner said Thursday.

“We’re not out of the woods yet,” said Charles Bloss, of Lecompton.

His cat Patches has spent time this week at the North Topeka Animal Hospital, but she may be able to come home today, Bloss said. Blood work results show that her condition is improving.

Bloss and his wife, Beth, believe the cat became ill from eating Special Kitty, a brand they bought at Wal-Mart.

“It was a total shock to us. Plus, it’s over $1,000 in veterinary bills,” Bloss said.
