KU group builds rape awareness

Rape isn’t just a women’s issue, according to Kansas University student Will Sellers.

“We as men need to do something to stand up and say that there are things that are going on that are not right,” Sellers said Monday.

His fledgling campus group, One in Four KU, on Monday hosted a series of sessions aimed at educating KU students – men and women – about what they can do to support rape survivors and prevent sexual assaults.

About 80 students attended one of Monday night’s sessions, led by One in Four USA, a national nonprofit organization that raises awareness among men about rape and sexual assault. The group was invited by the local chapter.

“The program tries to approach men as helpers rather than as potential criminals, potential rapists,” said Rami Fakhouri, a peer educator with One in Four USA.

Ten rapes and 14 sexual offenses were reported to KU’s Public Safety Office between 2000 and 2005. But the One in Four activists say many crimes aren’t recorded.

“It’s estimated that 95 percent of all rapes go unreported, which is the largest underreporting of crimes,” Sellers said.

Activists wore the alarming statistic that inspired their name in large letters across the front of their T-shirts: one in four.

The name refers to a statistic that one in four women in college will be the victims of rape or attempted rape, the organization reports, citing research by Mary Koss.

The group spread tips about how to help rape victims, with such directions as: tend to her needs, stop the violence, listen to her and believe her.

The event wasn’t closed to women. KU senior Jessica Genz said she stopped in to hear what the men had to say. She said KU does what it can, but it’s a big campus.

“I think KU is safe, but it could happen anywhere,” she said. “You just have to be cautious.”
