Crews end investigation of unidentified powder
Several pounds of an unidentified powder found Friday in a trash can at a Kansas Turnpike service center were disposed of and won’t be investigated further, Kansas Turnpike Authority spokeswoman Lisa Callahan said Monday.
Fire, emergency and hazardous materials crews responded Friday to the service area about five miles east of Lawrence on Interstate 70, after KTA employees found the substance wrapped in plastic in a trash can.
Crews removed a sack of 30 to 40 pounds of the powder, believed to be sodium hydroxide, Callahan said.
Callahan described the incident as small and isolated and said there were no injuries. For these reasons, she said, the incident won’t be investigated further.
