Three injured after car strikes utility pole

Three people were injured late Wednesday night when a car crashed into a utility pole in the 800 block of West 23rd Street.

Rachel R. Dulaney, 16, Eudora, was taken by ambulance to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where she was in serious condition Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Also injured when they were ejected from the car were Mark M. Miles, 18, and Justin James, 19, both of Lawrence.

They were transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. On Thursday, Miles was in good condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. James had been treated and released, she said.

According to a Lawrence police report, Miles was driving a 1987 Mercury Cougar westbound when it went out of control and struck the pole. No citations have been issued. Police are continuing to investigate the accident.

Heavy rain was falling when the accident was reported at 11:11 p.m. Wednesday.
