Lawrence escapes damage from storm

Lawrence dodged the brunt of threatening thunderstorms Wednesday night.

Heavy rain fell in Lawrence before midnight, bringing with it lightning, but no reports of significant hail or damage.

Other towns in the area sustained some hail from a line of several storms that came through Douglas County.

An officer in Baldwin City reported quarter-sized hail in the middle of the evening.

In Eudora, firefighters were sent out to a residence in the 600 block of West 26th Street on a call that lightning had struck the house.

Fire crews found a small fire in the attic and extinguished it; no injuries were reported.

Franklin County was under a tornado warning for several hours Wednesday evening.

A dispatcher with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said that he received no reports of a twister, but only reports of small hail in the area.

Rain in Lawrence could turn to snow by the morning, according to a report from the National Weather Service, but, if it does, it’s not expected to accumulate more than an inch.
