July 4 closings announced

Government offices and public services in Lawrence and Douglas County will be closed Wednesday in observance of Independence Day.

All city, county and state offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the General Services Administration and the federal courts.

City offices in most area towns and counties also will be closed.

Banks will be closed.

Lawrence Bus Co. buses as well as Lawrence Transit System fixed routes and paratransit buses will not run. But starting at 6 p.m., BS Transportation of Lawrence will drive to downtown parking lots to transport people free of charge to Burcham Park for the city fireworks display. The buses will run continuously. The Journal-World is sponsoring the buses. Parking at meters in downtown Lawrence will be free.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department offices and clinic will close. The Lawrence Workforce Center also will close.

No residential or solid waste will be collected Wednesday. Residential trash collections for Wednesday and Thursday will be one day later.

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be closed all week for maintenance. Eagle Bend Golf Course will be open. Call for tee times.

The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Ky., and the Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be open from 1 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

All other recreation facilities in Lawrence will be closed Wednesday; they will reopen Thursday. There also will be no recreational classes, special events, special population classes or adult and youth sports on the holiday.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed Wednesday.

Kansas University also will be closed. The Dole Institute of Politics will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department offices and clinic will be closed.

There will be no regular mail delivery Wednesday. UPS and FedEx regular deliveries also will not be made.

Home delivery and Bus 62 senior service meals will be canceled Wednesday. All activities at the Lawrence Senior Center, including clubs, classes and the noon meal, will be canceled.

Lawrence Meals on Wheels will not deliver. LINK, the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, 221 W. 10th St., will serve meals from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.

The business office of the Journal-World will be open for walk-ins and phone inquiries from 5:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

USA Today will not be delivered.
