Free rides available to view fireworks

Bus service is expected after all for this year’s Lawrence Jaycees Fourth of July fireworks display.

Final details were still being worked out Thursday, but it was expected that BS Transportation of Lawrence would provide bus service this year, said Jaycees member Gary Saathoff, one of the display organizers.

Starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday the buses will drive to downtown parking lots to pick up people wanting to go to Burcham Park, Second and Indiana streets, to watch the display. The buses will run continuously. The Journal-World will sponsor the buses and there will be no cost to ride them.

There also is no admission at the park, where thousands of people go to watch the display. The fireworks will be set off from the Kansas River levee across from the park. Live music will start playing at 6:30 p.m. Fireworks will begin at 9:45 p.m.

After the display several buses will be available to take people back to the downtown parking lots, Saathoff said.

On Tuesday the Perry Lake Association will set off fireworks from the lake’s dam in a public display expected to start at 9:40 p.m.
