Two men are in custody and a third suspect is at large following robberies of three Lawrence businesses early Tuesday.

According to police, around midnight a man grabbed an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register at the International House of Pancakes, 3102 Iowa. The suspect is described as 5-foot-7-inch black man between ages 20 and 25, wearing a white T-shirt, shorts and glasses.

In the other incidents, two men – Frank Lee Dean and Michael John Brinkman – were arrested by police early Tuesday in connection with one robbery and one attempted robbery at two Lawrence Kwik Shop convenience stores.

Dean and Brinkman were arrested after the second Kwik Shop robbery. While it is unlikely that the Kwik Shop and IHOP crimes are connected, police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said the department is investigating all possibilities.

At 1:42 a.m., at the Kwik Shop at 1846 Mass., one suspect took items from the cooler while the other man went to the register, threatened the clerk and took an undisclosed amount of cash.

Dean, 22, and Brinkman, 30, were arrested immediately after the second incident, an attempted robbery at 3:39 a.m. at the Kwik Shop at 845 Miss.

Brinkman and Dean, a registered sex offender, were arraigned Tuesday. Dean’s offense, listed on the Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s Web site, is listed as attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child under the age of 14.

Brinkman’s bond has been set at $15,000 and Dean’s at $25,000.

Both men will appear at 2 p.m. July 9 for a preliminary hearing in Douglas County District Court.
