On Father’s Day, time with family equals perfection

Last year on Father's Day, Jeff Morris' three kids gave him the best present ever: a full day without whining or fighting. He hopes for more of the same this year as he cools off in a lawn chair while his children - clockwise from front, Dusty, 8, Amanda, 10, and Jeanne, 8 - play in the family's backyard.

For Jeff Morris, spending the day with his family has always been enough on Father’s Day.

But last year, his three children dreamed up a gift that went beyond their traditional “quality time” to rival any present Morris had ever received.

He hopes for more of the same this year as he cools off in a lawn chair while his children - clockwise from front, Dusty, 8, Amanda, 10, and Jeanne, 8 - play in the family's backyard.

“Their idea of the perfect Father’s Day was a day of peace and quiet for dad,” he recalls. “They promised not to argue, fight, quibble, wine or cry.”

He admits he was skeptical. But they delivered, as promised.

“Probably the best part about it was THEY came up with it,” says Morris, the 40-year-old general manager of Pizza Shuttle. “It was probably the best gift I ever got.”

It’s not that his children – Amanda, 10, and twins Dusty and Jeanne, 8 – typically engage in knock-down, drag-out brawls. Like most siblings, however, they bicker about clothes and who’s touching whom – the kind of tedium that can wear a parent’s patience thin.

Still, Morris says there’s nothing better than enjoying a day when there’s no pressure to rush to a softball game or wrestling practice or Girl Scout meeting. A day when he and his wife, Lea, can just hang out with their kids.

He’s not sure what’s in the cards this year on Father’s Day.

“It’s pretty much a surprise,” Morris says. “We’ve got a doubleheader that day, so there will be a lot of softball involved.”

We asked a handful of other dads about their idea of a perfect Father’s Day. Here’s what they had to say:
