Juneteenth event has activities for youths

The Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence will have its annual Juneteenth celebration Tuesday at South Park.

It will be the third consecutive year for the celebration, which will kick off at 10 a.m. with a barbecue provided by Cook’s BBQ and the Lawrence school district.

About 450 youngsters from kindergarten through ninth grade will have plenty of activities to do throughout the day, including swimming.

“We are having face painting, games and craft projects,” program manager Jason Van Allen said. “We are also trying to get a Juneteenth-related performer to come.”

Juneteenth is a holiday that dates back to the end of the Civil War. On June 19, 1865, slaves in Galveston, Texas, finally heard the war was over. This was about two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
