Lawrence misses out on All-America title

Lawrence was not named one of the 10 winners of the All-America City award Friday night at a two-day event in Anaheim, Calif.

A contingent of seven community leaders – including City Manager David Corliss and Lavern Squier, president and CEO of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce – made the trip to California after Lawrence was chosen one of 20 finalists in the National Civic League program.

“We learned a lot from a number of different communities and heard a lot of good things about Lawrence,” Corliss said.

Members of the Lawrence delegation made a presentation to a jury panel, highlighting efforts to strengthen downtown, affordable housing work done by the Lawrence Community Land and Housing Trust, and youth activities related to the Success by 6 program.

Corliss said the city was covering some of the expense of the trip and the total was still being tabulated. He said Squier’s trip was not funded by the city.

“We had probably the second smallest delegation of the 20 communities there,” Corliss said.
