Ex-teacher charged in sex case waives hearing

A former Lawrence High School teacher accused of having sex with a 15-year-old student waived her right to a preliminary hearing Thursday morning.

During a brief court appearance, the woman’s attorney, James Rumsey, asked Douglas County District Judge Stephen Six to schedule her arraignment for June 19 so the defense could complete discussions with prosecutors. Six agreed.

The woman, who was in her first year of teaching at LHS, was arrested March 16 and charged with two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and two counts of criminal sodomy. She is free on $15,000 bond. Prosecutors allege the acts occurred between August and mid-March.

The Lawrence school board in April voted not to renew her contract for the 2007-08 school year, and she had been suspended when the allegations surfaced.

The Journal-World does name people accused of sexual crimes unless there is a conviction.
