Old Chicago sales go to school supplies

Old Chicago managers and servers will be working today to raise money for supplying low-income students with the pencils, papers and other materials they’ll need for school this fall.

The restaurant, 2329 Iowa, will donate 15 percent of all qualifying sales to a fund that will be used to buy school supplies and backpacks for children identified as needing them by the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence.

Old Chicago already has distributed 1,200 fliers announcing the event to people in the Lawrence area. People bringing in the flier will have 15 percent of their bills transferred into the fund.

The restaurant has extras for those who ask for them upon arrival.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Managers and some servers also will be donating their day’s tips to the fund.

Jamie Powell, assistant manager, said that the restaurant hoped to collect anywhere from $6,000 to $7,000 for the program, which will culminate later this year with a distribution celebration for children.
