6News video: Art a la Carte for June 1st, 2007

Welcome to Art a la Carte. I’m Journal-World arts editor Mindie Paget.

One of the quintessential sounds of summer in Lawrence – the Lawrence City Band – has returned for another season. The concerts, always at 8 p.m. Wednesdays in South Park, kicked off this week and run through July 18. The next installment will be “Music for a Summer Night,” featuring numbers like “Strike Up the Band” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

Elizabeth “Grandma” Layton turned to art late in life, in part to help cope with depression. Don Lambert, then a reporter with the Ottawa Herald, discovered Layton’s work in 1977. Since then, her drawings have been shown across Kansas – and even at the Smithsonian. She died in 1993. Today, the Lawrence Arts Center opens a new exhibition of her work. “Elizabeth Layton Revisited” begins with a reception from 7 to 9 tonight and remains on display through July 20.

Also on view this summer at the arts center are prints by artists involved with the Lawrence Lithography Workshop. Michael Sims established the venture in 1979 to provide a place for artists with little or no printmaking experience to collaborate with a master printer to produce original lithographs. Over time, the operation expanded and is now located in Kansas City. The opening reception for this show is also tonight at the arts center.
