Teens excel

To the editor:

You’ve heard the songs, perhaps you’ve seen the movie, and you may be thinking that a production of “My Fair Lady” by high school kids could be painful to watch. In the case of the Summer Youth Theatre production recently staged at the Lawrence Arts Center, you would be quite wrong about that! I saw the opening night show on Thursday and was amazed by what director Don Schawang and his young cast have achieved.

Matthew Drahozal gave a masterful performance as a younger, more handsome Professor Higgins. Clara Kundin brought her beautiful voice and delightful acting skills to the role of Eliza Doolittle. The supporting cast members simply did a wonderful job of acting, singing and dancing. The story moved along at a brisk pace and was highly entertaining to watch, with many funny moments.

Add to this the wonderful costumes, the inventive quick-change sets and the small on-stage orchestra, and you have a really enjoyable evening of live theater. This show deserved to be sold out at every performance.

Malika Lyon,
