Iraq war veteran arrested in shooting death of fellow soldier

? A Fort Riley soldier made a brief appearance in court Monday in the weekend shooting death of another soldier in Junction City.

Police said the shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. Saturday in an apartment building on the southeast side of Junction City. They found Spc. Christian Quinones, 21, a soldier at Fort Riley from San Diego, with a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Geary Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead, and an autopsy has been scheduled.

Police Capt. Tim Brown said officers arrested Sgt. Castulo J. Salas, 27, also from San Diego, on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter early Sunday. He was taken to the Geary County jail.

Salas has not been formally charged, but he appeared in court Monday and was assigned a public defender. Bond was set at $50,000.

Authorities did not release any additional details about the shooting. Ron Hodgson, an attorney with the State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services, said his office had been assigned to the case but couldn’t comment further.

A status hearing for Salas is scheduled for Thursday in Junction City, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 7.

Alison Kohler, spokeswoman for Fort Riley, said both soldiers were assigned to 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. Salas is with the headquarters company, while Quinones was with Company B. Both of the soldiers had previously been deployed to Iraq.

Kohler said that as of Monday morning the investigation was being handled by civilian authorities because the shooting didn’t happen at the Army post.

Fort Riley, northeast of Junction City, is home to more than 15,000 soldiers and the 1st Infantry Division.
