Sewage spill likely won’t affect Lawrence

A sewage spill in a North Topeka creek is not expected to cause any problems for Lawrence’s water treatment operations, which are on the Kansas River downstream of Topeka.

Jeanette Clamm with the Lawrence Utilities Department said Lawrence crews would conduct more testing on the Kaw to determine whether they needed to put the water through additional treatment processes. Clamm said the size of the spill and the fact it did not go directly into the Kansas River made it unlikely that it would cause any changes to Lawrence’s operations.

Topeka leaders on Thursday issued a health advisory to residents to avoid contact with Old Soldier Creek between U.S. Highway 24 and Garfield Park until further notice.
