Kevin Hooper’s baseball season is probably over.

Hooper, a Lawrence High product, suffered a broken bone in his left hand after being hit by a pitch July 21 in Toledo.

An infielder with the Mud Hens, Triple-A farm team of the Detroit Tigers, Hooper was struck by a pitch from Richmond’s Buddy Hernandez.

Hooper planned to return to his home in Wichita where he had an appointment to see a doctor.

“I’m not thinking about (next year),” Hooper told the Toledo Blade newspaper. “I just want to get this taken care of and feel better because it’s killing me right now.”

This has been the most injury-plagued season of Hooper’s nine-year professional career. He has been on the disabled list twice with a hamstring pull and a broken left big toe.

“It’s been a crazy year for me in general,” Hooper said. “To go from hardly ever being hurt in the past to getting bit by the (injury) bug this year is tough, but it’s part of the game, so I’ll deal with it.”

Hooper, 30, has spent most of his pro career in the minor leagues. He played in 14 games with the Tigers during the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Hooper was an eighth-round selection of the Florida Marlins in the 1999 draft after playing four years at Wichita State. He graduated from Lawrence High in 1995.
