Lightning strikes twice – in different locations

Patrick Buchanan, 9, looks at a splinter of wood that was knocked off a tree by a lightning strike in his parents yard at 1603 E. 18th Street. A storm Monday brought some rain and lightening as it passed over Lawrence mid-morning.
A morning thunderstorm blackened skies as it rumbled through Lawrence on Monday, causing lightning to strike two trees, nearby residents said.
One of the trees was at Robert and Diane Buchanan’s residence, 1603 E. 18th St.
“It shaved off the side of the tree,” Diane Buchanan said.
Although the lightning didn’t strike the house, it did knock out the computer and the television, she said.
“We were pretty lucky,” she said.
Another tree was hit at 3219 Tomahawk Drive, where power to the house was knocked out, resident Tracey Noll said.
The storm dropped 0.34 inch of rain on Lawrence, 6News meteorologist Jennifer Schack said.
Monday’s rain brought the monthly total to only 0.48 inch, well below the monthly average through July 23 of 3.10 inches. Lawrence’s rainfall total for the year is 19.06 inches. That’s nearly 4 inches below the year-to-date average of 22.75 inches, Schack said.
