Free State taps Hill as A.D.

Mike Hill will juggle a lot of activities during the coming school year.

Already Free State High’s assistant principal and head baseball coach, Hill also will succeed Steve Grant as the school’s athletic director.

“It’s better than being bored,” Hill said jokingly.

Hill becomes Free State’s second athletic director since the school opened its doors in 1997.

“I’m genuinely humbled by the opportunity,” Hill said.

He has served full time as an assistant principal since 2005-6. And under his guidance, the Firebirds baseball team won the 6A state championship in 2006.

“I have great confidence in Mike’s ability to take on these additional responsibilities,” Free State principal Joe Snyder said in a statement released by the school district.

Grant and Hill were assistant principals during the 2004-5 school year.

The former officially retired from that job in June of 2005, but has served as athletic director since 1996 while mentoring Hill.

“Steve had such a great impact,” Hill said. “He was a people person, and he was able to make connections.”
