Blood drive to have ‘M*A*S*H’ theme

The inaugural Lawrence Community MASH Blood drive gives area residents an opportunity to possibly save lives while honoring the military and a movie classic.

The two-day drive is set for 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kansas Army National Guard, 200 Iowa, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Community Blood Center, 1401 Kasold Drive.

The Lawrence Community Blood Center encourages people to dress as their favorite character from the 1970 film “MASH,” which is set during the Korean War. Leann Delong, recruitment representative at the Lawrence Community Blood Center, said the “MAS*H”-themed project has been successful in Kansas City and Topeka-area blood drives.

Delong said the summer is an important time to give blood because donations typically decrease as much as 20 percent while the need increases.

“It’s a difficult time of the year,” Delong said. “People are busy and they are on vacation. But there are more accidents and more of a need for blood.”
