Internet fundraiser for shelter gets boost

Internet donations on Tuesday flooded a Web site dedicated to raising part of its funds for the Lawrence Community Shelter, 214 W. 10th St.

The Web site, www.fandom-rocks.com, is an online gathering for fans from across the world of the show “Supernatural,” which features a fictional family from Lawrence.

Last month, Web site organizers Brande Ruiz, of Grass Valley, Calif.; Dana Stodgel, of Illinois; and Rebecca Mawhinney, of Canada, decided to start the campaign to benefit both the shelter and the international charity SOS Children’s Villages.

They had planned to raise $1,000 by encouraging other fans of the show to donate by Sept. 1, and the organizers were going to divide the amount between the two charities.

After a story was printed in Tuesday’s Journal-World, donations skyrocketed, and $1,100 was pledged by the evening, up from about $400 on Monday.

Ruiz said they will still not end the campaign until Sept. 1, and they will still divide the final total equally between the two charities.
