Witnesses speak about man hit by train

Witnesses have come forward with information regarding a 29-year-old Lawrence man who was dragged Sunday on a moving train nearly 200 feet before he came loose, police said.

The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. Sunday. According to police, the man became entangled with a Union Pacific Railroad train on tracks east of the Lawrence Visitor Information Center, 402 N. Second St.

A Lawrence woman told police that before the man was injured, she saw him leaning on activated guard rails as the train passed. The train’s engineer also reported seeing the man near the protective rails.

Another Lawrence woman and her teenage daughter told police that a few minutes later they spotted the man – who appeared injured and dazed – stand up near the tracks, police said.

Police said no witnesses have come forward who saw the man being dragged by the train.

Police, who would not release the man’s name on Monday, said they do not suspect foul play. The man reportedly told railroad investigators Sunday that he was trying to commit suicide.
