Arts commission wants to discuss work’s move

Some Lawrence Arts Commission members are upset with how the city has dealt with a piece of vandalized artwork as part of the city’s Downtown Sculpture Exhibit.

The arts commission will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fire Station No. 5, 19th and Iowa streets, to discuss the city’s decision to remove a vandalized sculpture from in front of the Eldridge Hotel at Seventh and Massachusetts streets. The sculpture, “Prayer Booth,” was reinstalled in front of the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St.

Some arts commission members have expressed concern that the sculpture should have been reinstalled in its original location. Michael Tubbs, a management analyst with the city who serves as the staff liaison for the arts commission, said the city was following past practice. He said that when sculptures in the past have been damaged, the city has moved them to a location in front of the law enforcement center in an effort to prevent future vandalism.

At the meeting, which is open to the public, arts commissioners will discuss whether to send a letter to the city manager protesting the movement of the sculpture.
