Vinland Fair talent show seeks entries

Matt Kirby would like to see something special for this year’s Vinland Fair talent show, which he is in charge of every year.

“It’s the centennial of the Vinland Fair, and while there hasn’t been a talent show all those years, it would be a good time for someone to sing a song about the centennial. Tell a story with a violin playing in the background. There are any number of avenues that people could share while honoring the centennial.”

The 100th Vinland Fair is set for Aug. 9-12. The talent show will be 6 p.m. Aug. 9. Kirby hopes there will be plenty of entries.

“The fair is going to be four days this year,” he said. “We hope people turn out for the talent show. We always have a lot of people because we have a lot of talent. It’s always interesting to see what they come up with, especially the children.

“We usually have a dozen people and the show goes for an hour and a half,” Kirby said.

The lineup isn’t set until shortly before the show starts.

“I’m adding people all the way up to 45 minutes before,” Kirby said. “People have to decide if they want to sing in public or not.”

It’s all about fun and Kirby said people shouldn’t be worried about their level of talent.

“If you want to do it, we’d love to have you,” Kirby said. “It’s not Carnegie Hall. It’s very low pressure. It’s like singing to your aunts and uncles. If you make a mistake, we’ll still love you.

“I encourage people to participate,” he said. “Show up and if you’ve got something funny you do, like ride a unicycle, please do.”
