Driver gets 60 days in emergency vehicle case

A 37-year-old Topeka man was sentenced in Douglas County Court Thursday on charges of assault and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Shanan Carson was fined $680 and sentenced to 60 days in jail and a six-month probation term for his actions on Aug. 6, 2006. According to a Eudora police report, Carson was driving east on Kansas Highway 10 when he failed to move away from emergency vehicles responding to an injury accident.

When he realized the vehicles were trying to pass him, he moved, but later swerved and honked at officials at the accident scene. One worker included Eric Lessig, a Douglas County firefighter/paramedic, who was nearly struck by Carson.
