A 22-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Wednesday after he brandished a gun and used it to strike another man in what police believe was an attempt to collect on a debt, Lawrence Police Sgt. Damon Thomas said.

The incident occurred after 5 p.m. outside the Jayhawk Motel, 1004 N. Third St.

The suspect approached a 36-year-old Lawrence man in the parking lot and hit him with the gun, Thomas said. The suspect then noticed that motel occupants could see him from the motel windows and fled north on foot, discarding his weapon on the ground, Thomas said. Police arrested the suspect near the motel, Thomas said.

If a man over 21 years of age has a gun in his possession, we must assume he is carrying legally until the police tell us otherwise. So far, we haven't heard, or maybe nobody's asked.

Or we presume that everyone with a gun is illegal. Thank-you, Topeka, for making a fine mess of things.

Couldn't have been a CC permit holder because according to local hype on this board if he was he would just shot the guy. Also he would have never thrown the gun away.

First, CONSUMER1-- NIIIIICE!!!!!

I thought bill collecters over the phone were a pain in the butt! Also, to quote the great comedy duo of the late 70's " What is the first thing you learn when you deal drugs?" DON't TAKE A CHECK!!!"

I was wondering what was happening, I saw all the police as I was driving by. I'm surprised we don't here more about things like this happening at that motel.
