Fireworks ban

To the editor:

I do not understand why the county commissioners continue to allow the sale of fireworks, seemingly ignoring the safety and fire concerns they bring. While the city of Lawrence has banned the use of fireworks within the city limits, the police have a nearly impossible job of trying to enforce the ban. Because fireworks can still be purchased on the very edges of the city, Lawrence residents have easy access to them. At least five families in my neighborhood are breaking the law, teaching their children that breaking the law is “no big deal.” And this is only July 2!

It would be great if the county cooperated with the city of Lawrence to put an end to personal fireworks once and for all. Surely the few hundred or thousand dollars the county makes from the permits could be made up in some saner, more patriotic way.
