City Hall has hired a new planning director, officials announced Tuesday afternoon.

The city sent out the following press release:

"The City of Lawrence announces the hiring of the Director of Planning and Development Services. Scott McCullough will join the city on July 30. McCullough will oversee the merger of the Planning Department and the Neighborhood Resources Departments to create the Planning and Development Services Department. The merged department will continue to provide planning services for the City of Lawrence and unincorporated Douglas County.

"'Scott brings experience, knowledge and energy to the Planning and Development Services Director position,' said City Manager David Corliss. 'His enthusiasm for the planning profession, background with inspection services, and his interest in ensuring quality growth makes him a good fit for the City of Lawrence and Douglas County.'

"'I also want to thank Sheila Stogsdill for her service as the Interim Planning Director. Lawrence and Douglas County have greatly benefited from her work as the Interim Director.'

"With experience in both large urban and small rural communities, McCullough has worked for Maricopa County, Arizona, Johnson County and most recently for Miami County. McCullough has an undergraduate degree in Architectural Studies from the University of Nebraska Lincoln and holds a Master of Community and Regional Planning also from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners."

McCullough replaces Linda Finger, who resigned as the city's planning director in November 2005 under pressure amid concerns that the city hadn't planned well enough for growth in the northwest area of the community, and generally wasn't being active enough guiding development. Those same concerns among the Lawrence City Commission also helped lead to the outster of longtime City Manager Mike Wildgen, Corliss' predecessor.
