Moral debate

To the editor:

In response to Richard Dorshorn’s “Loving God” letter to the editor, by what measure is Hitler an atheist? The Nazi troops wore belt buckles emblazoned with “Gott Mit Uns (God is with us)!” Reviews of Hitler’s personal documents show that he believed himself to be doing the work of God, demonstrating that his religious piety was more than a public face.

Meanwhile, calling God an “angry invisible deity” no more acknowledges God’s existence than does describing Santa Claus as a “jolly fat man.” Applying adjectives to imaginary creations does not validate them.

Lastly, it’s quite sad that Mr. Dorshorn cannot restrain himself from sinful nature and must rely on threats to keep himself in check. However, there is no reason he should take this as evidence that atheists have the same moral shortcomings.
