Sebelius names Harkins director of energy

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has named Joe Harkins director of the Kansas Energy Office.

“Increasing energy efficiency and promoting the use of renewable energy are both critical to our state’s future prosperity,” Sebelius said. “Joe’s leadership and extensive management experience will be essential as we implement a strong state energy program.”

The current director of the energy office, Jim Ploger, will maintain his responsibilities as energy efficiency and renewable energy director, and will closely work with Harkins, Sebelius said.

Harkins, Lawrence, had been serving as a special assistant to Sebelius. He has held numerous top positions in state government, including director of the State Water Office and secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. He retired as director of the Kansas University Public Management Center in 2003.
