Barn destroyed in blaze

A barn burned Friday in rural Douglas County to a total loss as firefighters from seven departments helped save surrounding buildings.

No one was injured in the blaze, said Dennis Snodgrass, assistant chief for the Clinton Township Fire Department.

The fire at 247 N. 1250 Road west of Clinton Lake began just after 1 p.m., and firefighters had it under control at 2:12 p.m., Douglas County dispatchers said.

Snodgrass said the rural departments call for mutual assistance to bring extra water to the scene during a structure fire.

“That’s the most critical thing out here in the country,” he said.

County records list Ervin and Penny Donaldson as the owners. Snodgrass said a property owner called in the emergency. The barn was about 150 feet away from a house, but several other buildings near the barn were undamaged, he said.

An investigator with the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office was unable to determine a cause Friday, Snodgrass said.
