Cycling event will affect some streets

Bottom line

City commissioners will consider a request to close sections of downtown streets for the 2007 USA Cycling Collegiate Road Criterium. The event would take place Sunday, May 13. The route would include Massachusetts Street from Seventh to 10th streets, New Hampshire Street from Eighth to 10th streets and Vermont Street from Seventh to Eighth streets.

Background

The route is the same as the one event organizers used last year. Bob Sanner, director of convention and sports for the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, said the route has been approved by Downtown Lawrence Inc. and the city's Public Safety Committee. Last year the event attracted 400 collegiate cyclists from 95 universities across the country.
