Cub Scouts spend a day at the Pinewood Derby

Event a chance for parents, kids to spend time together

A chance at victory came down to the wire for Andy Dominguez on Saturday.

“See, my dad screwed it up on accident,” the 9-year-old said about crafting his miniature wood race car. “I had to get a new one.”

Andy’s mother helped him put some finishing touches on his new car, just minutes before the Pinewood Derby entry deadline.

About 30 Lawrence Cub Scouts from pack 3071 faced off in the annual model car race in the cafeteria of Prairie Park School, 2711 Kensington Road.

“We’re basically here to have fun,” said Tony Covert, 8.

The event has been a nationwide Cub Scout tradition since 1953, when it was started by a California Cubmaster.

The cars, made from pine wood, can’t weigh more than 5 ounces and must sport only Cub Scout-approved wheels and axle lengths.

“It shows the kids responsibility … how to compete,” said Vincent Mireles, father of two Cubs.

Derby Winners

First place: Jaydin Riedel

Second place: William Harnar

Third place: Johnathen Kinder

The Cub Scouts work with their parents to design and decorate their cars.

But it’s important to find the most unique way to make the cars travel down the sloped track the fastest.

For some Cubs, it’s not so much about winning the race, but more about winning over their parents.

“I got to spend time with my mom and dad, which we never really get to do,” Andy said.
