Free State bowlers split
Leavenworth ? The Free State High boys bowling team used a strong effort by freshman Robert Wagner to defeat Leavenworth on Wednesday.
The Firebirds – who saw last Saturday’s home invitational pushed back a week due to inclement weather – rolled a team score of 2,258 pins to nip the Pioneers, who finished with 2,190.
Wagner had the top boys series of 595, a 198 average.
The Free State girls lost, 2,057-1,779, but senior Melissa Burnside turned in the best performance of the day for either Firebirds squad, rolling a 611, good for a 203 average.
Free State will return to action Saturday when it plays host to the nine-team Free State Invitational at Royal Crest Lanes. The event starts at 9 a.m. and should continue into the late afternoon.
