Mary Loveland, a former Lawrence school board member, is the seventh person to file for one of the board’s four seats up for election April 3.

Loveland, who filed Tuesday at the Douglas County Clerk’s office, said several people have asked her to run again.

“I think I bring some strengths to the board. By nature I am a problem-solver,” Loveland said.

Loveland, 58, lost her bid for a fifth four-year term in the 2003 election, finishing in seventh out of eight places.

“I told myself a year ago that I had to think about it and maybe give it another try,” Loveland said.

She said she had no agenda but would offer her experience with serving as a volunteer in education for more than 20 years.

“I think I’ve demonstrated a commitment to this community,” she said. “Most of my volunteer work has been directed toward young people and their education.”

Loveland and her husband, Charles, a Lawrence physician, have four grown children who all went through Lawrence’s schools.

“When we were raising our children we tried to emphasize them being successful in school because that’s the ticket to the future,” she said.

Other candidates who have filed are Marlene Merrill, Robert Rauktis, Victor Sisk, incumbent Rich Minder, Michael Machell and Michael Pomes.

The filing deadline is noon Tuesday. If more than eight candidates file, there will be a primary election Feb. 27.

The seats up for election are those held by Minder, Cindy Yulich, Leonard Ortiz and Sue Morgan, board president.

Morgan and Yulich don’t plan to run again. Ortiz said he was leaning against seeking another term.
