Offices, services to close for MLK holiday

Government offices and public services in Lawrence will be closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

They also will be closed in most area towns.

Lawrence, Douglas County, Douglas County District Court and state offices will be closed; so will federal offices in the General Services Administration and the federal courts.

The Lawrence Douglas County Health Department offices and clinic will be closed.

Most banks will be closed. Kansas University offices will be closed. The Dole Institute of Politics will be open.

Lawrence Transit System buses will operate regular routes. Parking will be free in downtown Lawrence.

No residential trash collections are scheduled today, but commercial collections will continue as scheduled.

To report a water or sewer emergency during the holiday, call the Utilities Department at 843-2685.

Recreation and aquatic centers will be open, except for the South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass., and Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St. All recreational classes and adult sports leagues will run as scheduled.

Eagle Bend Golf Course, 1250 E. 902 Road, will be open, weather permitting.

The Lawrence Workforce Center will be closed.

The Lawrence Public Library will be open.

Douglas County Senior Services will offer no services today, and the Lawrence Senior Center, 745 Vt., will be closed. Lawrence Meals on Wheels will deliver.

The post office won’t make regular deliveries. Express Mail deliveries will be made. Federal Express and UPS will make regular deliveries.

The business office at the Journal-World will be open normal hours. USA Today will be delivered.
