Free State, LHS call weekend events

Lawrence High and Free State High canceled Friday night’s scheduled basketball games because of inclement weather.

LHS canceled the boys varsity and junior varsity games scheduled at Olathe South.

The varsity Lions (5-3), who lost to Shawnee Mission East, 53-33, Tuesday night, would have faced the team that knocked LHS out of the 6A substate playoffs last year.

LHS athletic director Ron Commons said he would talk to officials at Olathe South early next week to find a time to reschedule the game. Although the schools had not set a date, Commons said they likely would play the game this month.

Setting a new time becomes less complicated because Friday’s game only involved the boys team – not the girls JV and varsity squads, which played Thursday night.

“It will be much easier to do,” Commons said.

Free State and Shawnee Mission East canceled their boys and girls basketball games scheduled for Friday.

Steve Grant, Free State athletic director, said he hadn’t determined a date for rescheduling yet. The most likely scenario is a Saturday rematch later in the month. Grant said he would make a decision by Wednesday.

Grant said the ice was more serious near the Kansas City metro high school. As of noon Friday, the Lancers were still planning to drive to Lawrence before conditions worsened. SM East has canceled all weekend activities.

Grant said Free State’s weekend bowling invitational also has been canceled. The Firebirds will make the event up either Jan. 20 or Feb. 16.
