Different tribute
To the editor:
Congratulations to Tim Burgess! How often these days do we hear about a good deed? Instead, the media seem to compete to present only the most horrific of stories.
Mr. Burgess’ wish to honor former Kansas University football coach Don Fambrough is commendable. But to do so out of loathing for the state of Missouri? Isn’t there more than enough loathing going on in the world without Lawrence contributing its share?
Here’s a thought: Instead of renaming the few blocks of Missouri Street near the stadium (what a logistical horror for the residents who live there!), why not call the new practice area that is being built adjacent to the stadium “Fambrough Field”? There you have a lasting tribute to the former coach in an appropriate location with no irritating disturbances to the residents of the existing blocks of Missouri Street.
Let’s honor coach Fambrough by taking the “high road” rather than perpetuating a sports rivalry with Missouri by renaming the street. Let’s honor our founders who named the north-south streets in Lawrence after the American states in the order they entered the Union.
Barbara M. Paris,
Lawrence
