Bank to give $100,000 to hospital project

Capitol Federal Savings has agreed to donate $100,000 to help fund an expansion of Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

The Topeka-based bank that operates several facilities in Lawrence will present a check at

9 a.m. Tuesday during a special event at the hospital, 325 Maine.

Jack Hamilton, president of the bank’s Capitol Federal Foundation, said he was particularly excited about the plans to expand the hospital’s maternity unit.

“Mothers and infants and their families need great support at the time of birth, and we hope our role in this portion of the expansion will provide part of that support,” he said.

Construction work has begun on a $40 million expansion of the hospital.

The project will include a new emergency department, the conversion of shared patient rooms to private rooms, an expanded surgery center, and additional birthing rooms.

The hospital hopes to raise

$8 million for the expansion through a private fundraising campaign.

Thus far, the campaign has garnered $6.64 million in pledges.
