Apartment fire displaces residents

A two-alarm fire damaged four apartments in the Eddingham Place Condomiums near 23rd Street and Naismith Drive this evening that will displace eight people from their homes for the evening.

Everyone in the apartment at 1408 W. 24th St. escaped at 5 p.m. without injury from the apartment that caught fire, said Division Chief Rob Kort, of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical.

Firefighters used water to put out the fire that started in the kitchen of a lower apartment. Smoke also damaged three other apartments in the west side of the building. Residents of the four apartments on the east side of the building will be allowed to stay there tonight, Kort said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and firefighters are still surveying the damage.
