Suspect in carjacking fails to appear in court

A Lawrence man who led police on a 130-mile chase across two states in November failed to show up for his court appearance Thursday in Douglas County District Court.

Brandon Callahan, 24, was scheduled to make his first appearance on robbery, fleeing and criminal damage charges, but a motion filed by the defense indicated Callahan is a patient at the Osawatomie State Hospital.

His attorney did not show up for the hearing either.

Callahan is out of jail on a $15,000 bond.

Judge Peggy Kittel said the case will most likely be rescheduled for next week.

Callahan is accused of carjacking a van outside a Lawrence gas station. The ensuing police chase ended more than two hours later in Henry County, Mo.
