Column critic

To the editor:

Pundititis: A common debilitating condition among regular newspaper columnists usually caused by being forced to meet a deadline when they have nothing to say. Symptoms include gross distortions, unsupportable claims, hackneyed analogies, willing blindness and superficial analysis. Often strikes national columnists when they believe they must deliver profound insights on subjects they know or care little about, but can also be observed at the local level. A fresh example is George Gurley’s preposterous column of Jan. 7, “Will fervent Islam overwhelm Christianity.”
