Iowa left-turn limitation proposal shot down

City commissioners unanimously rejected a request to limit left turns off a busy stretch of Iowa Street during morning and evening rush hours.

Commissioners said they would rather examine the feasibility of adding a center turn lane to the stretch of Iowa Street between Harvard Road and Bob Billings Parkway.

Cost estimates for adding a center turn lane were not available, but commissioners directed staff to begin discussions with the Kansas Department of Transportation, which potentially could share in the costs because Iowa Street also is U.S. Highway 59.

Neighbors surrounding the stretch of Iowa Street were opposed to a recommendation by the Traffic Safety Commission that would have prohibited left turns during the weekday morning and evening hours.

Commissioners dismissed the proposal on a 4-0 vote. City Commissioner Sue Hack was absent from the meeting.
