Artwork commissioned for new fire station

Fire Station No. 4, which recently opened along Wakarusa Drive, will have a new $38,000 piece of art as part of the city’s Percent for Art Program.

Commissioners unanimously approved the purchase of a piece of artwork titled “Beacon,” which will be placed near the station’s southeastern driveway entrance.

The sculpture, created by artists Gail Simpson and Aristotle Georgiades, should be completed by this summer.

Crosswalk, traffic signal near school approved

Commissioners unanimously agreed to install a pedestrian-activated traffic light and crosswalk on 11th Street between New Jersey and New York streets.

Several parents who have children that attend nearby New York School lobbied for the crossing.

It is expected to cost $30,000 to build and install.
