A new piece of art to commemorate the opening of Lawrence Fire Station No. 5 will be unveiled this weekend.

The Lawrence Arts Commission and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical will play host to an event at 2 p.m. Saturday at the station, which is at the southeast corner of 19th and Iowa streets.

The work, entitled “Monument to Firefighters,” is by South Dakota artist Benjamin Victor. He will be on hand to describe the process he used to create the bronze sculpture and also will give a demonstration.

The city commissioned the sculpture at $65,000 as part of Lawrence’s Percent for Art program, which requires the city to dedicate up to 2 percent of the construction costs of a public facility and park land to public art.
