City may prohibit some Iowa Street left turns

Motorists soon may be asked to limit their left turns from a busy stretch of Iowa Street.

City commissioners tonight will consider a recommendation from the Traffic Safety Commission to prohibit left turns from a section of Iowa Street during the morning and evening rush-hour periods.

The proposal would prohibit left turns from Iowa Street onto Orchard Lane, Oxford Road, Stratford Road and University Drive from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

City commissioners heard a similar request in October, but they denied it after several members of the public expressed concerns.

The Traffic Safety Commission took the issue up again and changed the proposal by pushing the prohibited turning time in the afternoon back to 4:30 p.m.

Some people worried that prohibiting left turns in the area would increase traffic on Harvard Road, which travels by Hillcrest School. Traffic safety commissioners said they hoped pushing the time back would give students more time to leave the area surrounding the school.

City commissioners meet at 6:35 p.m. today at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.
