Pay increases

To the editor:

I certainly think it sets a terrible precedent to let the county commissioners set their own salaries. I don’t think there are enough checks and balances on the amount of time they work on county business. They have full-time jobs, vehicle allowances and allowance for other expenses accrued on county business.

An example is the U.S. Congress members who give themselves cost-of-living raises automatically every year. In essence, the members of Congress are employees of the voters who put them in office, and it seems to me that the voters should determine their wage increases. Over the last seven years, the wages of the Congress have increased by $30,000, all at taxpayer expense. To top it off, the Congress worked only 100 days last year.

Our taxes go up more than enough each year without the added expense of County Commission wage increases.
