Lawrence couple win $20,001 Quick Pick

A Lawrence man recently won $20,001 in a Kansas Lottery game – but he had a hard time convincing his family of it.

John Kirby and his wife, Carolyn, told lottery officials they had bought a $5 2by2 Quick Pick ticket for the Dec. 28 drawing.

John Kirby won the top prize by matching two red numbers, 16 and 22, and two white numbers, 9 and 12, winning $20,000. He also matched one white number, winning $1.

Lottery officials said when Kirby called members of his family with the news, they didn’t believe him because he’s known as a prankster.

“The only person that believed we’d won was my mother-in-law,” John Kirby said. “Our children didn’t even believe us.”

The Kirbys, who own John Kirby Insurance, have five grown children and 10 grandchildren. They will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary this year and plan to use their prize money toward a cruise, according to lottery officials.
