Former mayor off the air at KLWN
Bob Schulte, above, has added another “former” to his resume.
Schulte – a former Lawrence mayor, former Lawrence city commissioner and former member of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees – this past week also became a former radio personality, after his part-time job at KLWN Radio was eliminated.
“For the past eight years I’ve worked four hours a week, and now KLWN cannot afford to continue to pay me,” Schulte told listeners Saturday, during his final morning show. “And so, somewhat sadly, for me, it ends.”
Schulte had worked for the station off and on since 1973, including a stint as program director. He said that he was notified in mid-December that his position was being terminated for financial reasons.
Schulte, who jokes that he was earning “tens of dollars” behind the microphone, still very much continues to work as vice president for Gene Fritzel Construction Co. and as sales manager for Fall Creek Realty.
Schulte says he’ll miss connecting with listeners, whether they’re calling his show or stopping to chat in line at the bank. He figures he logged more than 10,000 hours on the air.
“I probably never would have quit,” he said. “To me, that job was a hobby. Some people play golf. I went to the radio station.”
